The “H” word, aka hormone, gets a bad wrap. It’s infamy as the number one cause for teenage antics and new moms feeling a flood of emotions has made a lot of people use the word in a negative way. However, these chemical messengers of our bodies can actually work more in our favor as opposed to against us. Especially, when it comes to losing weight.

One fat-burning, gland-produced chemical in particular is called adiponectin. We like to call it the “Skinny Hormone” because 
new research has been revealed to prove that it may be the missing link for anyone who struggles to lose weight. This collagen-like protein signals the body to use fat as energy to power the body, aka burning the fat. Yet the problem is that for anyone who isn’t already lean, adiponectin isn’t frequently produced. THE S.A.D. AFFECT; AN OVERFED AND UNDERNOURISHED AMERICA

North America seems to mainly be made up of a continent full of people rushing through their busy lives…rushing to work, rushing to their kids’ sporting events, rushing to dinner. We want everything faster, easier, and more convenient and that is how we eat; packed up, taken To Go and eaten in the car on the way to some obligation.

We have extended bellies but we are never satisfied. We have “low-fat” and “non-fat,” and “diet” this and that, but we are getting fatter. Diabetes has been growing exponentially in the past two decades. Our nation as a whole is getting sicker and sicker. And through it all, we are consuming far more sugar than we may even imagine through our exponentially growing consumption of overly processed foods.

A recent study performed by researchers from the University of São Paulo and Tufts University showed that a whopping 57.9% of people’s calorie intake and 90% of the added sugar we consume comes from ultra-processed foods! Another 12.3% came from processed foods (not ultra-processed) and processed culinary ingredients. That means less than 30% comes from unprocessed foods! So it isn’t too far off to say that 70% of what we eat on a daily basis is junk food. This also means that for every person eating just 50% processed food there is another person eating 90% processed food.

From an Atlantic article on this study: “Processed” is not inherently an evil word. According to the Food and Drug Administration, the only time a food can be called fresh is when you’ve just ripped it out of the ground or off a tree and shoved it in your mouth. (Ok, you’re allowed to wash it, coat it, and use pesticides, too.) So bread, even the whole-wheat kind with the weird seeds in it, The researchers…defined “ultra-processed” as: Formulations of several ingredients which, besides salt, sugar, oils, and fats, include food substances not used in culinary preparations, in particular, flavors, colors, sweeteners, emulsifiers and other additives used to imitate sensorial qualities of unprocessed or minimally processed foods and their culinary preparations or to disguise undesirable qualities of the final product.

Meaning we are eating foods that we could never create in our home kitchens. Foods that flavor scientists have worked hard on to fool our brains. So-called foods that started out as “fresh” but after a long process became unidentifiable to how they existed in nature. “Much of the problem, they say, is that the ultra-processed sugar bombs are replacing “more nutrient-dense foods,” and leaving people “simultaneously overfed and undernourished.”

How can we be overfed yet undernourished? Because we are eating empty foods that fill our bellies momentarily but then leave us wanting more and more. We are only fooling our brains. We are putting so many foreign chemicals into our bodies that they are confused and becoming sick. Do you think that these people make these choices because they want to become obese, or don’t understand that Diabetes is dangerous? That they are just not smart? No, they do it for convenience.

They do it because they are pressed for time and their kids have to eat. They do it because it is marketedas safe and time-saving and the same as any other food. They do it because they don’t think they haveanother reasonable choice.

 What does this all tell us? That it has never been more apparent that the time for a Real Food Revolution is here and now. So how do we get there? Be a shining light for pure, premium whole foods and herbs. Not a nagging, condescending, hurts-your- eyeballs light but a gentle, kind light that illuminates what we CAN do to make the Real Food Revolution a reality. Find ways you can lead by example, spread the word. Most people just don’t know what they don’t know. We can take our power back.

Grow your own food (indoor and outdoor gardens in small spaces can still have great yields), shop at Farmer’s Markets when you can, support natural grocery stores, and try to opt for foods with the cleanest, least processed ingredients as often as you can. Cook at home so you can control the ingredients and avoid added sugars.

Wikipedia defines extinction as occurring “when [species] are no longer able to survive in changing conditions or against superior competition.” Typically, a species will naturally die out within 10 million years of first appearing on the planet. Some particularly well adapted species have survived, virtually unchanged, for hundreds of millions of  years without dying out. Modern humans? Experts say we have inhabited Earth for about 125,000 to 150,000 years—meaning we should be able to survive here for at least another 9.99 million years, give or take a few.We may not, however, if we don’t make some changes—and fast.


ARE WE ON THE PRECIPICE OF EXTINCTION?

Some experts state that humans are currently in the second generation of a five generation decline in our ability tosustain our species. I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready to see humans call it quits so prematurely.

Evidence that we stand on the precipice of possible extinction goes beyond what we know about the population explosion and the sustainability of the Earth’s resources; it’s getting worse! Our food supply is over processed, contaminated with multiple chemicals and compromised permanently by dangerous genetically modified organisms (GMOs). At best, it lacks the nutritional potency necessary to support good health and sustain a species.

Fertility among North Americans is in dangerous decline. Sperm and egg counts among young adults are hitting unprecedented lows. Couples struggling to overcome infertility are increasing in number. This has been attributed to hormone mimicking chemicals that have contaminated our food chain and concentrated in our bodies, disrupting the hormonal signals necessary for procreation. The higher we eat on the food chain, the more of these chemicals we’re exposed to.

We’ll take in fewer of the foods that damage our arteries and set the stage for the growth of cancers.

From there, the microcosm of each person’s health will translate to the health of the planet. Truly a win-win proposition! I don’t mean to suggest that this is an easy transformation; however, preserving our species on the planet goes back toour intelligent use of the resources it offers us. The food we eat is the most basic and fundamental of those resources.

I will repeat myself over and over until you understand ...YOU CAN prevent and heal most of your ailments, sickness and disease and start having total vitality by doing the following 3 things:

1.  Feed your body the nutrients it requires DAILY.  The body cannot

     Without stress management, all too often your body is always on high alert.              Over time, high levels of stress lead to serious health problems. There are many fad diets constantly getting promoted with huge advertising campaigns and it seems that not a week goes by when somebody hasn't released the latest and greatest weight loss program onto the market. Unfortunately the majority of these weight loss programs don't work for most people because they are simply too hard to maintain or alternatively they are detrimental to your overall health. There is not one diet that is perfect for everyone but there are some very good programs available that will give most people very positive results and these are all based on the same foundation of sound nutrition, good exercise and realistic expectations. Realistic expectations will get you a long way to achieving your goals so do take the time to consider what you can do, and what you can maintain over the long term. Once again using good quality supplements can help considerably by maintaining balanced nutrition and reducing hunger that comes about from your body telling you that something is missing in your nutrition. Having the support of those people around you will increase your chances of success and can help to give you the opportunity to set higher expectations and achieve your goals a lot sooner. Are you ready to lose weight?

Losing weight can be compared in a lot of cases to somebody trying to give up smoking particularly for a person who has been overweight for a long time and who has had bad eating habits for much of their life. Like smoking, over eating is a habit that is quite difficult to break for the majority of people. It is for this reason why many people spend the majority of their life going from one weight-loss program to another in the search for the Magic answer that will get them in the shape that they desire. 

Once again by likening this to giving up smoking, a person who is trying to lose weight will have a considerably better chance of success if they have made up their mind completely that this is what they want. If you start a weight-loss program without the intention of following through to the ultimate outcome then the doubt that is always in the back of your mind will make it so much easier for you to fail. For many people it is more about what goes on in the mind than what they are putting into their stomach and you might have to deal with these issues first before you have any opportunity to lose weight and get in shape. 

Mind power is a very powerful thing that can work for or against you and by eliminating habits from your life you will be retraining your mind to accept the new lifestyle as your natural state whereby you will be able to maintain a good healthy body weight for the long-term. We do most things in life subconsciously including good and bad habits and by turning those bad habits into positive lifestyle changes your body weight won't be something that is constantly the focus of your life.
